Leaders in Training (LIT)

What is Leaders in Training?

Leaders in Training is a hands-on counselor-in-training experience for kids entering 7th through 11th grade (next fall), perfect for graduates of Destination Science camp, student body officers, or students interested in gaining real-world leadership experience for their high school and college resumes.  Basic Leaders in Training is for first time LIT's, Advanced Leaders in Training is for returning LIT's.

In order to qualify, all LIT applicants must submit a LIT application, first time LIT applicants must also submit 2 references, attend a 5 hour pre-scheduled leadership retreat (see schedule below), and then be available to participate in the Leaders in Training program for 2 or more weeks at a nearby Destination Science camp location. 

LIT Retreat & Program fees are as follows:

  • $199 for the one-day leadership retreat and materials
  • $75 per week of camp (2 weeks minimum required)

 

Basic Leaders in Training (LIT 1st Year):

Has your teen previously participated in the Destination Science camp experience? Are they looking for something new and exciting to do this summer? Would they like to add real-time leadership experience to their school resumes? If so, they may want to consider becoming a Leader in Training with Destination Science! 

  •  Training Dates:
    • Northern California's Basic LIT 1 retreat is Saturday, June 2nd
    • Southern California's Basic LIT 1 retreat is Saturday, May 5th
    • Southern California's Basic LIT 1 retreat is Saturday, July 7th

 

Advanced Leaders inTraining (LIT 2nd Year & Up):

The advanced training is designed for teens who have completed Basic LIT Training and have volunteered for at least 1 year at camp. They are eager to further develop their leadership skills and take a more hands on approach at camp. Team building activities, advanced leadership skill training, and camp fundamentals are part of the advanced leadership training. 

  •  Training Dates:
    • Northern California's Advanced LIT 2 retreat is Sunday, June 3rd
    • Southern California's Advanced LIT 2 retreat is Sunday, May 6th

 

What to expect:

During the program, LITs report to camp from 8:00am-3:30pm Monday and 8:30am-3:30pm Tuesday through Friday.

Upon completion of their program, LITs will receive a Certificate of Completion showing success in the leadership program and acknowledging their community service hours!

Leaders in Training abide by the following guidelines:

  • Responsible for own actions
  • Able to present oneself as a leader and role model
  • Shows respect for teachers, fellow LITs and campers
  • Gives 100% at all times

 This program is only available at  California locations.  (N/A @ Los Olivos, Scripps Rch, UCLA.)

    2. Obtain the mandatory references. 
  2. Submit the application via fax, mail or email.
    1. Application due date for Northern California: 
      New and returning LIT's: May 142012
    2. Application due dates for Southern California: 
      Returning LIT's: April 20, 2011
      New LIT's Deadline #1: April 20, 2012
      New LIT's Deadline #2: July 05, 2012
    3. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received. An application is not considered complete until all references are received.
    4. Qualified applicants are placed on a first come, first serve basis.
    5. Acceptance into the LIT program will be communicated to the parents via email, at which time location and dates will be confirmed and payment will be remitted.
